HEART CONNECTION with YOUR VOICE
Did you know...?
• YOUR VOICE contains the emotional component of your Beingness, and
shares more of YOU than a thousand words on paper or electronic pixels
flashed across the internet.
Sound is the key to emotional expression, and often we remain silent in order to remain invisible. Sound makes emotion transparent, creates vulnerability, and deep connection.
My dear Mother is a continuing inspiration to me. She now lives on the East Coast
in assisted living, and has what I fondly describe as "swiss cheese"
memory. During our weekly calls, she has insights to share, and we laugh a lot, great for longevity! Even though she may not remember what movie she saw last night, she has something positive to say about her life.
"Oh, what a beautiful blue sky there is, the clouds are drifting in interesting patterns, and it feels like a balmy Spring day" - she will repeat on nearly every phone call, no matter what month it is.
It makes no sense to correct her, because her Eternal Now is so
pleasant, bright and full of new adventures, that I follow along and
allow her to be perfectly happy with having it always be springtime!
After hearing how many people have a hard time with their family, I am
so blessed to have a wonderful relationship with my Mom over the years,
and now the miles. My
promised call gives her a sense of connection that she doesn't get out
of on-going activities in the Mansion, which blur into sameness after
so many swiss cheese days... We trigger further-back clearer memories, which sharpen her mind and nurture her spirit.
She does not use voice mail, email or a computer, so my best connection is talking one-on-one. This holiday, I shared videos & photos on my laptop, and caught her up on all my friends & projects.
Because she doesn't have a realistic elapsed time sense, she will say
she misses the family, or hasn't "seen or heard from anyone in a long
time" - which is NOT true! For Christmas, I bought a RECORDABLE STORYBOOK (from Hallmark), designed for someone to read a story out loud to a loved one.
For Mom, I expanded the STORYBOOK's original design, and each family
member spoke their 30-second story of appreciation & memories, and
pasted photos of them with Mom on each page.
WHAT A GREAT WAY to share our hearts! Every time she opens the book, there is an actual personal message for her, spoken aloud, with pictures to look at, and the experience draws her closer to each one of us. She says she just LOVES hearing our voices!!

BURN CALORIES with 3 YOGIC BREATH PRACTICES

Ancient Yogis knew how to regulate the entire body's systems with the BREATH = vital energy = Life-Force = Kundalini. In normal life, it's the way we describe someone who is alive... they are BREATHING!
BREATH CONTROL is so important, it is the fundamental practice used to create excellence in martial arts, gymnastics, weight training & sports in general, and is the basis for effective meditation and hypnosis.
Most people want to keep track of caloric intake & consumption, and think they have to move their body in order to burn calories - NOT SO!!
There is a significant BURN factor no matter if you are at rest or exercising. It is proven through Indirect Calorimetry** which
measures how much carbon dioxide you expel, and relates it to the
amount of calories being consumed (usually focused on food digestive
process).
If your oxygen intake increases, so does your caloric consumption. That translates literally to "Breath more, Burn more".

1. Deep & Complete aka UMBRELLA BREATH
- Inhale through nose
- Exhale thru mouth
Lie or sit in a comfortable position with no restrictive clothing,
belts or wraps around waistline/lower belly. Place hands just below
navel center and feel abdomen rising during a natural inhale. Relax all
your muscles & clear your mind. Allow your surroundings to fade
into the background.
Close your eyes and begin a deliberate, slow inhale that fills up the
lowest portion of your belly, like an umbrella opening at the bottom
and unfolding upwards. Release the accordian pleating of your lungs
& torso, and then fold up again into a compact pole.
BE SURE to fill up 3-Dimensionally (front, sides & back). Pay
full attention, and especially expand the lowest ribs to feel
spaciousness in low back.
Regulate your intake, so that you fill the lowest third of pelvis &
belly, then mid-torso area, and finally float the collar-bone up gently
to allow the top of lungs to fill.
Beginners, DO NOT HOLD THE BREATH when full. In fact, immediately allow
air to fall out of your mouth, and empty torso in reverse order.
Start emptying at the collarbone, then press air out of chest, and
finally, tug gently on lower transversus abdominus muscle group
(squeeze waistline to spine) to flatten tummy & expel every last
drop.
Keep lengthening the time of your inhale and exhale, and over time you will see progress in your capacity.
Again, if you are a beginner, DO NOT HOLD the breath out, simply
continue (circular or connected breathing), and let air flow into the
lowest belly, then fill up your chest, then finally expand the top of
lungs again... and empty out in reverse.
Practice 3 -30 minutes, pace yourself. Yawning is normal!
Advanced students familiar with Bandhas may practice a Root Lock or
Complete Lock at the height of the inhale, and/or at the bottom of the

2. Kapala-Bhati aka FIRE BREATH
- Inhale thru nose
- Exhale thru nose to build heat
- Exhale thru mouth to detox
- add "HA"-sound for emotional release
Sit or stand upright with the head gently floating atop the spine.
Begin your practice by simple AWARENESS of your surroundings. Center
& ground, start with 3 slow UMBRELLA Breaths.
FIRE BREATH is properly done as an IMPULSE initiated by contracting the
respiratory diaphragm, which expels all the air out suddenly. The
inhale happens by itself. Engage Uddiyana Bandha sharply, then release.
DO NOT shrug or slump or contract the shoulders. Remain fairly
motionless, isolating the movement of the diaphragm.
Start with a slow rhythm, repeating the exhale every 4 seconds, and
build up speed to 2 exhales per second. Start with 1 minute duration,
progress to 3 - 15 minutes over time. Stop if you feel light-headed.
ALWAYS INHALE thru the nose, the EXHALE can be through the mouth or
nose. Hotter if done thru the nose - if you are toxic, expel thru the
mouth at first, then continue thru the nose.
Adding sound on the exhale can be very cathartic, and exhausting. Pace
yourself. Receive the best results if you do NOT stop to drink water.
Coughing is normal!
This is a fierce practice and a beginner should practice slowly,
gently, and for short spurts at a time. Build your capacity to sustain
a relaxed, precise impulse for the exhale - rather like a train's
"choo-choo-choo-choo" - steady, strong, working, but not struggling.

3. Improvised & sounded aka ACTIVATED BREATH
- Inhale + Exhale thru mouth + nose
with extensive variety of mouth shapes and rhythms
Lie or sit in a relaxed position. Make sure to have an empty stomach
and a location which gives you permission for creating strange, weird
& loud noises.
Prepare with at least 3 UMBRELLA Breaths. When you feel full of oxygen,
you can begin your improv, and always return to an Umbrella Breath when
needed.
Using your mouth in a variety of shapes, start with vowel sounds (a,e,i,o,u), and break up the inhale & exhale in spurts, increments, and explosions, lengthening the time you spend on one inhale or exhale.
Change suddenly, surprise yourself, inhale & exhale quickly, then
slowly, half-way, fully, part-way, and keep experimenting. Allow weird
spacey & alien noises.
Draw out a long vowel sound and let it go. Pretend you are a church
organ being tuned, and allow your pipes to fall down or up the scale,
making a short melody on the spot. Change the beginning consonant &
use the same vowel, or try a new one - make up your own language.
HAVE FUN! and play, shifting the Shape of your mouth, the Rhythm &
Duration of your sound, your Vowel & Tone, the explosion or wailing
or animal or oozing noises that may come out - let the entire
unconscious world inside of you WAKE UP, and use YOUR VOICES.
You may have the urge to laugh or scream, shout or cry. Emotional
release is normal! Always return to Umbrella Breath for a way to calm
down, stay grounded, especially if you feel light headed or nauseous
(also normal).

**Indirect calorimetry is the only accurate and clinically feasible
method of measuring energy expenditure. It is called “indirect” because
the caloric burn rate is calculated from a measurement of oxygen
uptake. Direct calorimetry implies a measurement of heat released by
the body, which is technically difficult and clinically impractical.
Indirect calorimetry relies on the fact that burning 1 calorie (Kilocalorie)
requires 208.06 milliliters of oxygen. Because of this very direct
relationship between caloric burn and oxygen consumed, measurements of
oxygen uptake (VO2) and caloric burn rate are virtually
interchangeable. Oxygen uptake requires a precise measurement of the
volume of expired air and of the concentration of oxygen in the expired
